THE RAPE OF THE INNOCENT.

The issue of RAPE OR SEXUAL HARASSMENT has been so rampant in Nigeria that one is beginning to fear for the future of this country.. It seeped gradually into every cranny of the country and eroded the line between sexual sanity and insanity. We planted the seed, we watered the plant and now we wonder how we have gotten to this stage where a woman is raped every five hours in Nigeria. Social vices are like little flames of fire, if you don’t quench them immediately, they grow into infernos that cannot be easily put out.

When we talk of sexual harassment and rape, many people assume that it must be violent -with the victim incurring all manner of injuries, and blood flooding down their thighs. But it is not always so.

For the past few days, social media has been buzzing with the news of several sexual violations. https://julietscorner.com/2020/06/20/the-rape-of-the-innocent/Uwavera Omozuwa was raped and killed in the church, 19-year-old Barakat was raped and murdered,Jennifer an 18-year-old was gang-raped by 5 men, a 12-year-old unidentified girl was gang-raped by 11 men, Grace Oshiagwu, a 21-year-old lady was also raped and murdered.

With the consistent reporting of victims of rape and sexual assault, you might be tempted to believe that there is a rise in these violent crimes. But the truth is that there is no surge. More people are only just finding out about how deeply rooted this malaise is, within the Nigerian society.

The advent of social media and the encouragement rape victims are now getting to speak up is one of the many reasons we are getting more rape reports. We have also gotten to a point where people cannot look away and pretend that “women are just overreacting” https://julietscorner.com/2020/06/20/the-rape-of-the-innocent/ .

Well over 700 cases of rape has been recorded since January to May 2020, in Nigeria. This was disclosed by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu. One rape case is always recorded every five hours

The Question To Be Asked Is Not Why is rape so prevalent in Nigeria But What Must We As Mothers, As Government And Stakeholders Do, To Curb Out This Social Malaise And Protect The Sanity And Sanctity Of Our Young Girls And Boys? https://julietscorner.com/2020/06/20/the-rape-of-the-innocent/

We must as a matter of life and death educate our children on the issues of molestation, rape and assault. Most of our children can not decipher when a rape is under way. so the issue of Sex Education in Schools and at home must be taken seriously.

Mothers should henceforth owe it as a duty to protect their children from sexual assaults by making sure that children are being alerted and to always stay far away from ‘uncles’ and cousins because most rape cases are from relatives and loved ones.

Mothers please let your girl child know that her private part is and should remain private and any invader must be shunned.

Be your child’s confidants and always encourage him or her to speak up when anyone tries to molest them. Tell them to shout and scream when anyone is trying to touch their private part. let them know that fear is the only weapon that rapist use to threaten their victim. let them know that the only way to shun this rapist is to put fear behind them and be bold enough to say NO to any of their relatives who tries to molest them.

Encourage them to Act-Up and Speak-Up against any possible invasion into their privacy. This will enable them guard against any of their relatives attempting to molest them

Most importantly, we as parents must show and pay special attention to our children. we must not focus on making money all the time. Let us get close to our children, let us be their close pals and confidants, let us know when our children are having some emotional and psychological challenges and help them pass through this stage of adolescence with grace. Teach them the importance of prayer by praying with them as a family. Behave well before them. The children are watching you.

Our children should be our world and all we do must revolve around them.

IF WE AS PARENTS DON’T PROTECT THEM, WHO WILL.

LET US DO OUR PART AND LEAVE THE REST TO GOD.
